The Southeast Community College Lady Storm Volleyball team kick started the season by hosting the Rhiannon Kay Peak Invitational, Aug. 23 and 24, at the Truman Center.
Cloud County Community College, Marshalltown Community College, McCook Community College, Northeast Community College and Southwestern Community College also competed in the weekend invite.
On Friday, Aug. 23, The Lady Storm beat Cloud County 3-1 before falling to Northeast 3-1.
On Saturday, Aug, 24, SCC surged past Southwestern 3-1 and won a hard-fought battle with Marshalltown 3-2.
Head Coach Carrie Puhalla was pleased with the way the Lady Storm started off the season.
“I think the girls are bonding better and faster than we have in the past years,” Puhalla said. “We know what we need to work on for the next few games, and I think that we have a good starting point.”
Hannah Mitchell notched a team-leading 35 kills in the invite, followed by Caitlen Wuebbles with 34, and Allison Triplette with 32.
Wuebbles led SCC with 11 blocks, while setter Emily Schrempp paced the Lady Storm with 115 assists.
“(The Lady Storm) are some of the smartest players I have recruited in a while,” Puhalla added.
Southeast hits the road Friday, Aug. 30, to play in the McCook Invite.
