The SCC lady Storm split a two game series with the Hastings Junior Varsity team, Friday, April 26, at Hastings.
Hastings beat up Southeast in the first game, resulting in an 8-0 “Run rule” in the fifth inning.
Head Coach Tiffany Higgins said SCC played well for four innings, but defensively “came apart” in the fifth.
The team was able to rebound in the second game, upending Hasting JV, 3-2.
Higgins called the win “(The) best showing we’ve had all season as far as playing a complete game.”
Southeast led 3-0 before Hastings staged a late inning comeback, loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh. The team was able to get the final out and hold on for the win.
Camie Fuller belted a home run to go along with three hits to help power SCC’s attack.
Aurianna Corrales (2-5) picked up the win, striking out four batters while giving up four hits.
Higgins said that Corrales had her “best all-around performance of the season.”
The team’s record stands at 7-13, but several games this year have been cancelled due to the weather.
“It has definitely been a frustrating season as far as the weather is concerned,” Higgins explained. “But every other team in the region is dealing with the same conditions, or worse, so it hasn’t put us at a disadvantage to others.” Higgins clarified.
“As a team, we focus on what we call ‘controllables’; since we can’t put the weather in that category, we don’t worry about it,” Higgins concluded.
SCC will compete in the Region IX tournament this weekend in Columbus, weather permitting.
Southeast is seeded third and will take on North Platte Community College in the first round of the double elimination tournament.
Higgins is optimistic the team can make a run in the postseason.
“We have been talking about peaking at the right time all season, (and) now is the time,” Higgins said.
“Our ladies have greatly improved their skills and their mentality,” Higgins added. “We want to finish this season with no regret, which means leaving it all on the field and knowing we did everything we could to be successful.”
