While the last month of play for the Lady Storm has had its ups and downs, the team fought its way to become the Region IX champions and will play at the District F playoffs in Bismark N.D. on Sunday, March 11.
The winner of the tournament will advance to the national tournament.
The Lady Storm basketball team returned from Norfolk on Tuesday, Feb. 7, with a 61-52 win over Northeast.
“(This was) a good road win to take a 4-0 lead in the Conference,” said head coach Vicki Wooton.
SCC went into the half leading Northeast with a score of 24-21. SCC defeated Northeast and raised their record to 17-2 on the season.
“We played solid the entire game,” Wooton added.
Sophomore guard Monique Stevens of Wodonga, Victoria, Australia, led the Storm with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 blocked shot.
Mesha Phillips, a freshman guard from North Las Vegas, Nev., gave SCC 15 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocked shots and 6 steals.
“This was a team win,” Wooton said. “We shared the ball and took good shots.”
Following that win, the SCC Women’s Basketball team suffered a tough loss at home on Saturday, Feb. 11, against North Platte.
“We came out sluggish and tired,” said Wooton, “and shot poorly from the floor.”
Southeast went into the half trailing North Platte 31-35.
“We did come back to within 4 after being down 37-46,” added Wooton, but SCC never recovered from the deficit and lost 53-60.
The Lady Storm fell to 17-3 on the season and 5-1 in Conference.
For the game, freshman guard Adrianna Heredia from Las Vegas, Nev., came off the benchto give SCC 11 points.
Brittany Fraser, a 5’10” freshman from Las Vegas, Nev., came into the game and played great defense on North Platte’s leading scorer.
The Southeast Community College Lady Storm Basketball team raised their record to 18-3 and 4-1 in conference.
SCC was down by 3 at half time. The Lady Storm played aggressive defense and out scored Brown Mackie by 10 for a 73-66 win on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
“We did a great job of game management down the stretch,” said Wooton, “and we also made our free throws.”
Freshman Hannah Tatum played the best game of the season scoring 14 points and 5 rebounds.
Also scoring in double figures for the Storm was freshman forward Kindrea Poole of Las Vegas, Nev., with 19 points, 18 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals, and Stevens, who had 16 points and 9 assists.
The Lady Storm Basketball team moved their record to 19-3 in the season with a 52-42 win over McCook on Saturday, Feb. 18.
SCC went into the half leading McCook by 10, and the Lady Storm played aggressively on both sides of the court to out score to secure the win.
“We played play strong defense,” said Vicki Wooton, “to off set our poor shooting from the floor.”
Stevens scored 21 points and 4 assists for the Lady Storm.
Also scoring in double figures for the storm was Poole with a double/double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
The SCC Women’s Basketball team fell to 19-4 on the season after suffering a loss to North Central on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
“We didn’t guard, and we dealt with foul trouble throughout the game,” said co-head coach Joel Wooton.
SCC went into the half trailing North Central 32-39. The Lady Storm couldn’t recover in the second half and lost 64-89.
Stevens led the Storm with 17 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.
Phillips gave SCC 12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 steals for the game.
The SCC Women’s Basketball team became the Region IX champions with a record of 20-5 on the season after a win over North Platte on Wednesday, Feb. 29.
“It was a very balances scoring game,” said Vicki Wooton, and “we played good defense and had great free throws shooting.”
SCC went into the half leading North Platte by 13 points. The Lady Storm came out in the second half outscoring North Platte by 83-59 for the win.
Poole led the Storm with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Caitlin Madden, a freshman guard from Lincoln, gave SCC 14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals for the game.
