The men’s basketball team is developing a winning strategy for this season and this showed in the last two weeks of scrimmages, according to Head Coach Joel Wooton.
The first weekend the team played in Northern Iowa against Kirkwood, Ellsworth and Quakersdale Prep. The team lost to Kirkwood in OT, but won the next two games.
The second weekend, the team played in Warrensburg, Mo., against Iowa Western, Neosho and Missouri West Plains. The team won against Iowa Western and Missouri West Plains, but lost to Neosho.
During both weekends the team was playing against top twenty caliber teams.
“I’m pretty happy with the way we played both games [and] with the improvement from week 1 to week 2,” Wooton commented.
“I like our team’s work ethic and team attitude,” continued Wooton.
There are only two returning players on this season’s team. And of the three transfer students, only one has played in a regular season.
Wooton added that the team is developing a chemistry that is working for them. He said they are talented players that are starting to figure out their roles and are adapting and accepting of the positions they are playing. Even this early in the season, Wooton feels, some players are stepping up as leaders.
“We usually have a lot more trouble with that many new guys playing,” he said.
Wooton concluded by saying, “We have a lot better chance at the National Championship because of our chemistry and adaptability.”
