MILFORD- Southeast Community College students and faculty can become part of an activity meant to cultivate musical talent and relieve stress, known as Open Jam Session.
“It is an opportunity for anyone, staff or students to play acoustic instruments just for fun one day per month.” says John Pierce, program chair of Electronic Systems Technology and Energy Generation Operations at the Milford campus.
Open Jam Sessions began this April and so far there have been three staff members, one student, and one outside musician to attend this activity. The sessions are only available at the Milford campus and they are held in the auditorium of the Milford campus. This activity is held at noon for one hour on the first Friday of each month.
Although any musician is welcome to join, only acoustic instruments are allowed so that musicians don’t have to deal with loud amplifiers disturbing other classes as well as complicating set up and tear down time.
Some acoustic instruments would include the acoustic guitar, ukulele, violin, upright bass, and acoustic bass.
If a person is asked why they like music, there will be several answers to this question. Some might answer that music is their life, music is their motivation, or music is their one true love. Music is what inspired John Pierce to conduct the Open Jam Sessions.
Pierce has been a musician for 45 years and has participated in many jam sessions in his office and labs on the campus. “ I thought it would be for not only musicians on campus to have some stress-relieving time but also an opportunity for closet musicians to strut their stuff and get some low-pressure exposure to performing and improving their musical skills.” states Pierce.
Anyone who joins the activity will get experience, stress relief, and make new relationships with fellow musicians. Another plus is that there is no cost to join this exhilarating activity that Milford has to offer.
