The Southeast Community College Art Department is involved in a number of upcoming events in Beatrice.

The Art Department, located on SCC’s Beatrice Campus, is supplying 50 pottery bowls for this year’s annual Empty Bowls Luncheon. The event is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 17 at Classic’s Bar & Grill inside the Beatrice Country Club at 1301 Oak St.

A variety of soups from Beatrice fine restaurants and caterers will be served. Attendees will receive a pottery bowl crafted by SCC and Beatrice High School students, Ervin Dixon of Cedar Creek Pottery, Patrick McKinney of Flowing Stone Pottery, and Down Under Pottery in Lincoln.

ArtVenture, one of the most beloved and popular programs offered by Girl Scouts, is an arts education-based leadership program that provides girls with the opportunity to collaborate with professional artists to create an original work of art. Girls work alongside artists throughout the entire process, from conception through completion. Through this process, girls learn the value of healthy self-expression, teamwork and collaborative problem solving. These works of art, along with additional pieces donated by professional artists, are then sold at a silent auction from which all proceeds benefit Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska.

The Lincoln artVenture is scheduled from 3-5 p.m. April 26 in Lincoln Station’s Great Hall. Cost is $20 per person. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served. Nancy Hagler-Vujovic, SCC art instructor, has collaborated with the Girl Scouts on this project each of the last three years.

“Last year we made pottery; this year we made mixed media collages,” Hagler-Vujovic said. “These works will go to auction in Lincoln, and all proceeds will go to the Girl Scouts of America.”

And finally, the Beatrice Public Library will host an interactive public art installation sponsored by SCC’s Art Department. The works will be on display from April 11-26 and be in the form of a chalkboard wall with an invitation to visitors to respond to the prompt “In a perfect world . . .” Colored chalks will be provided, and visitors are encouraged to express their thoughts and artistry in this familiar medium.
