Southeast Community College’s new Diversified Manufacturing Technology program will prepare workers for high-paying, high-demand jobs in Nebraska’s manufacturing sector.

Statistics indicate that manufacturing jobs in Nebraska are available and on the rise, and they provide an average income of more than $54,000 a year. Workers in manufacturing enjoy a $17,000 pay premium over non-farm jobs in Nebraska, but skills are required to do these jobs.

SCC is offering the Diversified Manufacturing Technology program to provide the hands-on training these workers need. The DEMT program begins with five introductory courses that lead to the Diversified Manufacturing Technology Certificate, which prepares workers to enter the job market at the Certified Production Technician level.

Certificate courses are taught using both online resources and classroom laboratory equipment. Each course aligns with the nationally-recognized Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC) Certified Production Technician credential.

The completed certificate lays the foundation for entry into other SCC manufacturing and production programs. The Diversified Manufacturing Technology program is built on courses in each of those programs to provide broad technical experience.  A student who completes an Associate of Applied Science degree in Diversified Manufacturing will be prepared to work in a variety of manufacturing environments at an advanced level of responsibility.

The certificate courses begin Oct. 6, the first day of SCC’s Fall Quarter. Classes are offered in Milford two days a week and in Lincoln over five Fridays. Flexible hours accommodate student work schedules.

The DEMT program was developed through U.S. Department of Labor funding shared among five consortium community colleges in Nebraska. The IMPACT grant enables the College to provide enhanced online resources for the certificate classes through ToolingU and a learning coach to ensure that each student succeeds at every level of the program.

Contextualized materials build academic skills for those students who have been out of school or who have struggled to succeed in a classroom. Additionally, grant monies provide special ERGOS® physical assessment to help students plan their career path according to their physical abilities.

Veterans and workers who have been laid off are a special recruiting focus of this program, as are those who are working at entry-level jobs and wish to advance.
