It appears that SCC coach Joel Wooton drew the proverbial short straw.

The coach has to get his team ready for a 12-hour bus ride to northern North Dakota to take on Dakota College at Bottineau on Sunday, March 8, for the men’s district championship.

Meanwhile, Co-Head Coach Vicki Wooton gets to stay home to host the women from Dakota College at Bottineau at the same time as the men’s game. The husband and wife team have coached the Lady Storm for several years, but this time Joel will not be on the sideline for the Women’s district championship game.

“It will be tough,” Wooton said. “But at this time of the year, the players know what they need to do, and will be prepared. Our women are an exceptionally basketball smart team.”

The women have enjoyed their best season in years. They have won 13 in a row, including the Region championship over Central Community College, 83-65, on Monday, March 2.

Coach Vicki Wooton said her team started off slow against CCC, only leading by seven at the half. But in the second half, the coach said SCC “settled down” and did a better job of running the offense to pull away for the win.

Chelsey Savage led the ladies with 19 points. Veshae Wilkinson pulled down 17 rebounds and scored 10 for a double/double.

“The entire team played great defense; It was a great team win,” Wooton added.

The men and women are one win away from a berth in the National Junior College tournament.

Coach Joel Wooton said the SCC men will leave at 2 p.m. Friday and drive to Fargo, N.D., and stay the night. They will then drive the rest of the way and practice at Bottineau on Saturday.

You can see the women’s game live on ihigh.com/sccstorm Sunday, March. 8, at 1 p.m. There will be regular score updates from the men’s game during the broadcast.
